Common repairs and typical costs
Decking board replacement sits at the lower end of the range and scales with how many boards need replacing. Swapping rusted galvanized fasteners for 316 stainless is modest in cost but a major longevity gain in saltwater. Piling work is the significant job. Repairing a piling with a wrap, patch, or partial replacement runs $300 to $1,000. Full replacement runs $500 to $1,500 per piling, higher when the water is deep or access is limited. Storm and emergency repairs typically cost more because of urgency and the extent of damage.
Repair or rebuild?
If your pilings are sound and the damage is surface-level, decking, railings, or hardware, repair is almost always the right call. If multiple pilings are failing or the structure is racking and out of square, a rebuild may cost less over time and will likely require a fresh permit. A site visit is the only way to know for certain.

Permitting note
Repairs that construct, alter, or repair docks and bulkheads on tidal water in Virginia generally need an approved Joint Permit Application. Your contractor will confirm whether your specific repair triggers that requirement.
